Growing the Industry through Training and Technology

We talk about it, we fret over it, and we complain about it, maybe it’s time we take action.  This is exactly what we are going to do!  Joining forces, ARBURG, Turner Group, and Kruse Training have assembled a distinguished panel of experts to evaluate and deliberate on crucial strategies for sustaining our industry’s prosperity. Central to this endeavor is the requirement for a substantial influx of skilled team members. Seize the opportunity at the 2023 Training Summit to gain valuable insights and play an active role in tackling one of our industry’s foremost challenges.

Manufacturing requires deliberate strategies to guarantee the plastics industry’s sustainability.  We encourage you to join us at this critical Training Summit, where we will be joined by Industry leaders, seasoned professionals, and Educators to help map and pave the path for the future.

“What if we train them, and they leave?”, “what if we don’t train them, and they stay?”

There is an old story of two managers discussing staff training. The first manager objects to training, saying, “What if we train them and they leave?” The second manager replies, “What if we don’t train them and they stay?”

The quote is actually credited to Henry Ford “The only thing worse than training your employees and having them leave is not training them and having them stay”.

We have entered a new wave of automation and digitization that will have a big impact on the skills necessary to remain competitive.  According to McKinsey & Company, the new automation revolution will have a major effect on employment in the coming years and nearly every job will change, many quite profoundly.

Reskilling or Upskilling?

The future of work will require two types of changes across the workforce: upskilling, in which staff gain new skills to help in their current roles, and reskilling, in which staff need the capabilities to take on different or entirely new roles.  To be prepared for success in the future, we need to commit to training the workforce properly now to prepare for “upskilling” our workforce.  According to the above-referenced McKinsey report, the reskilling challenge will be critical in operational sectors such as manufacturing.  The skill set of our current manufacturing segment needs to improve quickly to ensure that our workforce is prepared for the disruptions that are ahead.

Where to Start?

Arburg Team

Many companies, such as ARBURG, have developed internships that have been in place for decades. ARBURG has developed over 2000 apprentices in the last two decades.

For companies that have no formal program for internships or apprenticeships, we have a way to help.  The purpose of the upcoming TechXellence 2023 is to come together as an industry alongside educators to find the best path forward for accessing the youth to attract them to a meaningful and fulfilling career in manufacturing, specifically the plastics industry.

We understand training and its value.  In an article in Harvard Business Review, training requires hands-on practice, accountability and breathing room to learn the concepts.
