“Gratitude is the single most important ingredient to living a successful and fulfilled life.” – Jack Canfield
On Thanksgiving Day, we often take the time to express gratitude to those that we love and appreciate. What if we took every day to thank someone in our lives genuinely? Whether it’s a family member, the barista that makes our favorite drink, a stranger on the street or the person who packs our groceries for us. Gratitude is good for our health, communities, businesses, and the world.
By definition, gratitude is the quality of being thankful: readiness to show appreciation for and return kindness. Gratitude is the positive emotion that allows us to be thankful for the good in our lives. As a beginning, it is only necessary to pause, notice and appreciate the things we take for granted. It can be as simple as food, clean water, friends, family, or the appreciation for sunshine. It can also seem difficult to be grateful for adverse conditions, people or attitudes, but that is where the power of gratitude lies. It changes us and is good for our health. To be grateful for those teaching us patience and tolerance has a life-changing impact on our well-being and those around us.
An article in Forbes titled “Living In Gratitude”, talks about how difficult it can be as a leader to express gratitude in the workplace, but more and more companies and CEOs are finding ways to do that. Do you want to learn more about ways to bring gratitude into your company? You can find more details here.
Margaret Cousins says,” Appreciation can make a day, even change a life. Your willingness to put it into words is all that is necessary”. As we step into this Thanksgiving holiday, let’s take the opportunity to express our gratitude for all we have been given. For the friend sitting across the table or raising their children alone. I hope that we can carry that same gratitude every day. Living in gratitude starts with taking the moments to recognize that we are blessed, and expressing gratitude enriches the lives of those around us.
There are many ways to begin the practice of living in gratitude. Here is a Ted Talk by Brian Doyle on how he found a way to express gratitude to those around him in this 365 Day Challenge.
