Arburg’s History Is Rich – 100 Years Rich

A Century of innovation, progress and success

2023 marks the 100th anniversary of the Hehl family company, a century of innovation, progress and success in the plastics industry. ARBURG is celebrating this fantastic anniversary at its locations around the world.

Arthur Hehl, a trained precision mechanic, started in 1923 as a self-employed tradesman. In 1926 he began to manufacture surgical instruments from the cellar in his home in Lossburg, Germany.

In 1936 the whole family began working together in the “Fabrikle,” or “little factory,” in the extension of his house. After Arthur and his sons Karl and Gerhard Hehl were drafted into the war, mother Maria Hehl took over the business.

During the war, Karl Hehl invented the company name and logo. He combined the first syllable of his father’s name, Arthur (AR), with the last syllable of Lossburg (BURG). The lettering with the distinctive typography characterizes ARBURG to this day.

In 1954 Karl developed his first injection molding machine for his own use to over-mold the plug contacts on flashbulbs. The plastic insulation protected the contacts from corrosion.

Demand for the injection molding machine led to the innovation of the “C1” series, which began with series production in 1956. With great foresight, Eugen Hehl began to develop an appropriate sales structure, and in 1959, ARBURG was represented at the K trade fair in Dusseldorf for the first time.
